When it comes to imbibing during this holiday season, there are choices to make when it comes to calorie intake. As you know, overindulging in regards to food and drink are very common this time of year. Using the excuse that the diet will be back in full-swing on January 1st is also common. Why not look for ways to curb the intake now by looking for other options. With me, I always look at the cocktails and what I can do to have a healthier option.

Egg nog is common in my household and I am a glutton when it comes to a couple of these during this festive time of the year. So, I look for other drinks to cut back on when I know that I will have some bad moments in my judgment.

Another favorite cocktail of mine is the Margarita. I have come up with a recipe that is very refreshing and more natural than the typical way to prepare it that I feel will give you a better and healthier choice. This way, you will not feel so guilty when you have that second plate of food, or that second glass of Egg Nog.

Using fresh ingredients is key to having a nice rounded beverage. Using store-bought mixers tend to have an overabundance of calories and will pack in the sugar. Here is a recipe that is not only easy to prepare, but will also give you a state of mind knowing that you have done your part in keeping the calorie intake to a minimum.


1 ½ oz. Tequila Blanco (Clear or White Tequila)

¾ oz. Borducan Orange Italian Liqueur

½ oz. Honey Syrup (3:1 hot water to honey. Simmer water and honey on the stove just for enough time to ensure a good mix. Allow the syrup to get to room temperature before using.)

Juice from ½ of a Lemon

Juice from ½ of a Lime

Sparkling Water

Method: In a mixing glass with ice, pour in the first three ingredients. Squeeze in the juices from the lemon and lime. Cap the mixing glass with a shaker tin and shake well. Strain into a 14 – 16 oz. glass filled with ice. Top off with sparkling water. Garnish with a wedge of lemon and a wedge of lime on the rim of the glass. Enjoy!
