You may have heard about people drinking apple cider vinegar for their health, and wondered what the heck it is. Drinking vinegar? How beneficial can that be? Well don’t think that it’s too crazy, because apple cider vinegar has many health benefits including alleviating cold symptoms, soothing a sore throat, easing stomach problems, preventing indigestion, boosting energy, helping with dandruff, and the list goes on.

Apple cider vinegar is proven to have antibiotic properties and its acidic profile can aid in staving off many common illnesses. If you are suffering from the common cold, try using apple cider—it can help shorten the length and the severity of the cold. Most germs can’t survive in an acidic environment, so mix ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar with a ¼ cup of warm water, and gargle twice a day.

Another benefit of drinking apple cider vinegar is that it is very high in potassium. Potassium is a very important building block to maintaining good health—you need it to maintain youthful and healthy tissues in your body. Many people link low potassium levels to chronic fatigue, dark circles under your eyes, high blood pressure, arthritis, itchy and flaky scalp and lack of mental alertness.

According to the Daily Health Post, “the body constantly strives to achieve a state of homeostasis, or state of equilibrium. One way is by keeping the body’s pH balance (or acid-base balance) within the normal range of 7.35-7.45.” Drinking apple cider vinegar helps in maintaining your body’s healthy alkaline pH level. If you have a high acid level, or a low pH level, you will find yourself fatigued and your body might be producing a high level of mucous, which can lead to an increased risk of infections.

So, how do you drink apple cider vinegar and have it taste good? If you’re just looking to throw it back, mix 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with ½ cup of warm water and drink up. If you’re looking to slowly sip and enjoy your drink, here is a recipe for you:

  •  1 ½ cups of fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons of honey
  • Stir this together and enjoy!

Drinking apple cider vinegar doesn’t seem so scary now, does it? Go experiment with some recipes and you may find yourself turning to apple cider vinegar for many health reasons and benefits.
